Three of the top four seeds still have a chance to reach the Wimbledon semifinals as they take the court on Wednesday at the All-England Club. Rafael Nadal is the only exception, while Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer are still alive and kicking. They will be back in action for what is an intriguing quarterfinal schedule.
(1) Novak Djokovic vs. (26) Marin Cilic: Good news for Cilic: he has nothing to lose. Bad news for Cilic: he has nothing to show for his nine past performances against Djokovic. The top-seeded Serb is dominating the head-to-head series 9-0 and 21-3 in total sets. Bad news for tennis fans: this is probably going to be a straightforward, drama-free affair. Good news for tennis fans: we’ll at least get a few Goran Ivanisevic sightings. Who can ever forget Ivanisevic’s epic triumph at Wimbledon in 2001?
(3) Andy Murray vs. (11) Grigor Dimitrov: It’s not often that Dimitrov makes it further at a Grand Slam than significant other Maria Sharapova. Well, he has this fortnight. Now Sharapova can focus all of her efforts on providing vociferous support from Dimitrov’s player box. Of course, he will need every ounce of support he can get given that all of England will be rooting for his opponent. On paper, this should be the best match of the day. Then again, on paper people like Sharapova, Serena Williams, and Rafael Nadal would still be in the tournament.
(5) Stan Wawrinka vs. (4) Roger Federer: Nothing screams “hit the snooze button” quite like Federer vs. Wawrinka. It’s generally even less in doubt and less entertaining than Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams. Federer and Wawrinka may not share a last name, but they do share a nation, an Olympic gold medal, and a friendship. That’s bad news for tennis fans, who have watched Federer compile a 13-2 lifetime record against his fellow Swiss–including 10-0 outside of clay–while doing so in routine fashion. Wawrinka recently shortened his first name from Stanislas to Stan, so perhaps he is hoping that Federer doesn’t realize that it’s the same guy whom he completely dominates.
(8) Milos Raonic vs. (WC) Nick Kyrgios: Raonic is yet another nightmare of a grass-court matchup for Nadal. The Canadian serves out of a tree and can punish flat, penetrating groundstrokes from the back of the court. He will be able to push Nadal around on this surface…. Oh wait? Nadal lost?!?!?!? Well, Raonic-Kyrgios will be much different kind of matchup that should go something like this: ace, ace, ace, ace, change ends, ace, service winner, ace, ace, service winner, service winner, ace, ace, change ends, repeat. In all seriousness, though, a clash that will be decided by just a few points here and there will likely come down to experience–which Raonic has.
