A look at Monday’s fourth-round Wimbledon matches, including Djokovic vs. Tsonga
By Ricky Dimon
It won’t be quite as manic of a second Monday this time around at Wimbledon. Three men’s third-round matches have not yet been completed, so only the top half of the draw will be making its way into the fourth round. Both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are bidding for quarterfinal spots.
(1) Novak Djokovic vs. (14) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: At first glance, the head-to-head series is not so lopsided. Tsonga has defeated Djokovic a respectable five times in 17 matches. But that does not tell the real story. The Frenchman once held a 5-2 advantage over Djokovic. Now the Serb has won 10 in a row, with 15 consecutive sets in his favor and eight straight sets without even being pushed to a tiebreaker. That kind of domination brings to mind “rivalries” like Tomas Berdych vs. Kevin Anderson, Andy Roddick vs. Tommy Robredo, and–going back a little further–Ivan Lendl vs. Brad Gilbert.
Jeremy Chardy vs. (26) Marin Cilic: Sergiy Stakhovsky followed up his 2013 upset of Roger Federer by losing to Jurgen Melzer. Stakhovsky followed up last week’s upset of world No. 10 Ernests Gulbis by losing to Chardy. Now it is Cilic who is looking to build on a big win as he goes up against Chardy. The Croat took down Berdych in straight sets on Friday for his most important victory since a four-month suspension that began last summer at the All-England Club.
(3) Andy Murray vs. (20) Kevin Anderson: How well is Murray playing at Wimbledon? So well that Anderson may even rather be playing Berdych (against whom he is 0-11 lifetime) instead of Murray. The third-seeded Scot triumphed at SW19 last year and so far this fortnight he has dropped a mere 19 games–and zero sets–in three matches. For whatever it’s worth, this matchup also features two of the tour’s all-around best significant others: Kim Sears and Kelsey Anderson. Kelsey has an edge in terms of social-media activity, but Kim has an edge in terms of owning two border terriers–the best kind of dog there is!
(11) Grigor Dimitrov vs. Leonardo Mayer: This was supposed to be Dimitrov vs. David Ferrer. Then Andrey Kuznetsov happened. Like so many others before him, Kuznetsov could not recover from a career-best win and he promptly lost two days later–to Mayer. Speaking of significant others, Maria Sharapova has also seen her draw open up on the women’s side with Serena Williams having lost to Alize Cornet. Are the stars aligned for both Dimitrov and Sharapova to make some serious noise this upcoming week at the All-England Club?
