Biggest casualty of the day was 13th seed Richard Gasquet who blew a 2-set lead against talented teen Nick Kyrgios who tweeted that he’d played his heart out, but he earned his third round place saving nine match points along the way for a 3-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5 10-8 victory. Gasquet should not feel too bad as he is only just coming back to form after a back injury.
Following him out of the tournament was Gael Monfils, who came unstuck against another young rising star in the ATP Jiri Vesely. This time it was Vesely that saw a two set lead escape his grasp before Monfils dragged him back via two tie-breaks before Vesely just edged him out in the decider 7-6(3) 6-3 6-7(1) 6-7(3) 6-4.
Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, seeded 15th had no reply after levelling a match following a long first set tie-break against Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas, losing in the decider 7-6(12) 5-7 6-2.
It fell to seven-time champion Roger Federer to restore order as rain brought the roof out for the first time this tournament, as he defeated Gilles Muller with ease. Alas the weather is set to be not at all fair, so expect to see the roof in action a lot over the next couple of days while te top players keep their fingers crossed that their court assignments mean they get to play under it. It is almost as if the organisers knew when they put defending champion Andy Murray out on Court 1 for his second round match, much to some fans’ disgruntlement. But Murray is safe and sound under the roof on Friday, as is last year’s finalist Novak Djokovic. Will Nadal and Federer be so lucky on the second potential day of disruption?
