On a sunny day in Eastbourne the defending WTA champion joined the seed carnage of the early rounds as she bowed out to USA power-hitter Madison Keys. She books herself an all-American clash with Lauren Davis who put paid to former champion Daniela Hantuchova in some style with a straight sets 6-3 6-3 win.
There was nothing like chatting about a bit of football, as Caroline Wozniacki gave her opinions about the forthcoming clash between England and Uruguay at the World Cup. Why would a Dane care? Well five of her favourite club’s players are in the England squad, even though it clashed with the expectations of a family friend, from Uruguay.
“One of our family good friends is from Uruguay. He asked me the other day, You better be supporting Uruguay.
“I’m like, Well, I will be supporting England. He’s like, No, no. You have to reconsider that (smiling). He’s like, Well, Suarez is from Liverpool and he plays for Uruguay. I’m like, Yeah, but you know, we have quite a few more…”
She faces the conqueror of Victoria Azarenka, Camila Giorgi next.
British No. 1 claimed the best win of her career, putting out Flavia Pennetta in three sets as she continues to race up the rankings having next to know points to defend now after missing most of the season as she still suffered the effects of Glandular fever. She might expect another three setter against Petra Kvitova.
