Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen earned an upset of Colombian seventh seed Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 as the smaller men’s event took a definite second billing to the women also on at Devonshire Park. The 32-year-old, who reached the Queen’s third round last week but suffered with a leg problem, will next face France’s Eduardo Roger-Vasselin, a winner over Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-4. Julien Benneteau beat Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan 6-2, 6-4.

Joao Sousa made the most of his good fortune on grass as intended first-round opponent and former winner David Ferrer withdrew prior to the event with stomach illness, setting the Portuguese up for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 defeat of Italian Paolo Lorenzi and a second-round spot.

Second-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco began with a victory over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 while third seed Roberto Bautista, another Spaniard, beat compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 6-3. Players from the traditional clay-courting nation is showing no signs of fear on the grass with the start of Wimbledon looming.

Austrian eighth seed Jurgen Melzer beat Halle finalist Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-4, 6-3 while Croatian Mate Pavic defeated Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez 7-6(4, 6-3. There was an opening win for German Jan-Lennard Struff against Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-2
