British No.3 Johanna Konta will be among the players headlining on another packed day at the Aegon Classic on Wednesday when she takes on Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak on the Ann Jones Centre Court.
Konta was among the winners on Tuesday when she knocked out 14th seed Kurumi Nara 6-3, 6-1 in an accomplished grass-court performance. She said she was enjoying playing in front of her home crowd, something which could work to her advantage against Wozniak.
“The atmosphere has always been good here,” said Konta. “There are always lots of children around and a lot of clapping so that’s always exciting. I think you feel that energy through the whole tournament.”
Wozniak earned her second round spot by saving match-point to beat Great Britain’s Heather Watson 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Top seed Ana Ivanovic was also one of the winners on Tuesday when she showed why she is among the favourites for this year’s Aegon Classic title with a tidy 6-4, 6-1 win over Germany’s Mona Barthel. 2013 champion Daniela Hantuchova got the defence of her Aegon Classic title off to the perfect start with a 6-1, 6-4 win against rising Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic.
“I love that court,” said Hantuchova after the match. “For me this is the most exciting time of the year; to be on grass. Every time the grass-court season comes, I just naturally feel a bit more confident.”
The Ann Jones Centre Court will see another day of world class tennis on Wednesday. As well as Konta flying the home flag, Australian former US Open champion Samantha Stosur is in action against Christina McHale, while America’s sweetheart Sloane Stephens has a tough match in prospect against former Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone.
