World No.3 Wawrinka Receives Wild Card To Join Aegon Championships Line-up

The Australian Open champion and World No.3 Stanislas Wawrinka has added further strength and star-quality to the Aegon Championships player field after receiving a wild card into the tournament at The Queen’s Club, 9-15 June.

Wawrinka, who blasted his way through the opposition in Melbourne to win his first Grand Slam title, joins the current Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, World No.6 Tomas Berdych and 2011 runner-up Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the field. The youngest man inside the Top 20, Grigor Dimitrov, and four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt will also compete for the prestigious Aegon Championships trophy.

Tournament Director Ross Hutchins, said: “This is fantastic news. Stan has been a revelation this year, breaking through at the very highest level, and playing some spectacular tennis. He adds further strength and competition to the Aegon Championships line-up, and we are delighted that he has chosen to come to The Queen’s Club.”

Wawrinka said: “I am really looking forward to playing in the Aegon Championships and very grateful that the tournament saved a wild card for me. I love London, I love the atmosphere, it is an important tournament with a lot of history, and playing at The Queen’s Club gives me the best possible chance to become comfortable on grass.”

David Macmillan, Chief Marketing Officer, Aegon UK, said: ”This is fabulous news. Stan shook the tennis world with his victory in Australia, and with Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych and Jo Wilfried Tsonga just some of the players alongside him, the Aegon Championships promises to be a spectacular event.”

The Aegon Championships has one wild card still to award. The others have gone to Dan Evans, James Ward and Marcos Baghdatis.
