This summer’s Citi Open in Washington, D.C. announced its early entree list on Wednesday. Headlining the ATP singles draw so far are John Isner, Richard Gasquet, and Lleyton Hewitt. Bob and Mike Bryan are on board to top the doubles field, while WTA star Sloane Stephens has signed up for the women’s singles event.
The tournament’s Twitter account posted the following: “First player commitments for 2014 are in! Bryans, Isner, Stephens, Hewitt, & Gasquet all coming to DC!”
Isner is a two-time runner-up at the event, including last year to Juan Martin Del Potro. The 6’10” American also reached the final in 2007, winning five straight matches in third-set tiebreakers before finally succumbing to Andy Roddick. Isner is an awesome 19-6 lifetime in Washington, D.C. and has never lost prior to the third round.
Gasquet, who–like Isner–has also committed to the BB&T Atlanta Open one week earlier on the schedule, has made only one previous appearance in Washington, D.C. The 13th-ranked Frenchman retired in his first match against Kristof Vliegen in 2010.
Hewitt is more of a mainstay at the Citi Open. The 33-year-old Australian has made six trips to the event and he won it back in 2004. Hewitt, though, has not won a match in Washington, D.C. since 2009. He lost in the first round last season to Ryan Harrison.
The Bryan brothers have lifted this trophy three times, all in succession between 2005 and 2007. They are 25-8 lifetime at the tournament but are just 1-2 since their last triumph seven years ago.
Stephens reached the semifinals of her second Washington, D.C. appearance in 2012 before falling in last year’s first round.
