· Judy Murray and TV presenter Helen Skelton launch Great British Tennis Weekends 2014
· Great British Tennis Weekends will see thousands of families hitting the courts across the country – for FREE !
· The first Great British Tennis Weekend takes place this weekend (17th & 18th May)
British Fed Cup Captain Judy Murray and television presenter Helen Skelton joined the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) today to announce the launch of four ‘Great British Tennis Weekends’ which will take place across the country from May to July 2014. The weekends will see thousands of park sites and clubs up and down the country offer completely free opportunities to play the game as tennis fever grips the nation once again in the lead up to The Championships, Wimbledon.
People inspired to get on court will be able to take part in Cardio Tennis, Mini Tennis, disability tennis and tennis coaching – all completely free as part of the LTA and Tennis Foundation’s drive to get more people playing more often. Venues will provide rackets and balls, and absolutely anyone can get involved. Whether you’ve never picked up a racket before or are a seasoned regular – there is no excuse not to come down.
The dates for the weekends are:
· Saturday 17th – Sunday 18th May
· Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd June
· Saturday 28th – Sunday 29th June
· Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th July
The 2014 Great British Tennis Weekends follow the success of last year’s one off Great British Tennis Weekend which saw over 7,500 people take to the courts of 39 venues on a single weekend.
LTA Chief Executive Michael Downey, said: “We are really excited to be bringing Great British Tennis Weekends back this summer. Tennis in Britain has enjoyed some fantastic results during the last 12 months with the Davis Cup team reaching the quarter-finals of the World Group and Andy having won Wimbledon last year. For us, it’s about capitalising on the interest in our sport, so that when people at home are inspired by what our players do on court, that we offer them an opportunity to get on court without barriers getting in the way. We have venues nationwide including park sites and clubs running their own Great British Tennis Weekends, and so there really is something for everyone. Most importantly, these weekends are going to be a lot of fun – that friends and families can enjoy together.”
British Fed Cup Captain Judy Murray added: “The Great British Tennis Weekends are a great way to help people get out there on the courts. Tennis is such an enjoyable and fun sport, and it’s really important that we enable as many people as possible to pick up a racket. By providing free venues, coaching, a variety of tennis activities for all abilities and a handy online booking system, it’s really easy for people to get involved. I’d really encourage everyone to give it a go at a venue near them.”
Television presenter Helen Skelton also commented: ““Having been fortunate enough to soak up the Wimbledon atmosphere on a number of occasions, I’m really excited about Great British Tennis Weekends hitting the country. Tennis is such a fun game that all the family can enjoy together. My family and I played loads of tennis when I was growing up – it was one of the things we all did together. With Cardio Tennis, Mini Tennis, disability tennis and tennis coaching available at a host of local venues and for free, as well as rackets and balls, absolutely anyone can get involved. I’ll be picking up my racket and getting out there myself as we get ready for the biggest ever summer of tennis and get behind Andy Murray and the British tennis stars.”
