SAN DIEGO’S COLLEEN CLERY FERRELL ADVANCES TO 2ND ROUND AT USTA NATIONAL SENIOR WOMEN’S HARD COURT TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Top-Seeded Ros Nideffer Plays Opening Match in 50 and Over Division on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
San Diego’s Colleen Clery Ferrell is very happy the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships are being played this week at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
On Monday morning, she took a break from a busy schedule to eliminate fellow San Diegan Janene Christopher, 6-1, 6-0, on Court No. 1 to advance to the second round of the 50 and over division.
Clery Ferrell is Club Director of the Balboa Tennis Club, a 25-court tennis facility located in San Diego’s Balboa Park. She also serves as Tournament Director of the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships which will be played at the Balboa Tennis Club next month.
This week’s USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships in La Jolla offer local players such as Clery Ferrell the chance to play in a national tennis event without having to take time off to travel.
“I always look forward to the opportunity to play in the (Senior National) hard courts. I have two kids in high school and working two jobs, so I don’t have a lot of time,” Clery Ferrell said. “It’s very special to still be able to play the game and compete. I love the thrill. It’s an opportunity I can never pass up when I’m healthy.”
With the majority of seeded players receiving first-round byes, Tuesday’s schedule will feature a full slate of second-round matches, including Clery Ferrell versus fifth-seeded Tai Sisson of San Dimas, Calif., at 8 a.m. and defending 50 and over champion Tracy Houk of Montara, Calif. against unseeded Gail Warden of Sherborn, Mass., at 9 a.m.
Ros Nideffer of San Diego (Rancho Bernardo), the top-seed in the 50 and over division, will face unseeded Christy Foreman of Goleta, Calif., at 9 a.m. Nideffer, a former touring tennis professional, was once ranked as high as No. 15 in the world.
In the women’s 60 and over division, two-time defending singles champion Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif. plays unseeded Fay Matsumoto of Prescott, Ariz. at 9:30 a.m. (All times are PDT)

La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis enthusiasts to view the tournament with free admission. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee.
The championship singles and doubles final in each women’s division will be played on Friday, May 16, with the exception of the 90 and over doubles final on Wednesday, May 14, and the 90 and over singles division, which is using a round-robin format and will be completed on Saturday, May 17. Consolation events will be played through the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday, May 18.
The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 42nd Annual Spring Senior Championships for men will be played concurrently with the women’s events. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they will feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments.
The men’s events will include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over as well as singles events in the 80 and over, and 85 and over age groups. Total participation for both the men’s and women’s tournaments is expected to be 300-plus players.

The starting times for each day of the tournament will be as follows: Tuesday, May 13 through Friday, May 16 – 8 a.m.; Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 – 9 a.m.
