The Mutua Madrid Open is just around the corner and the big names of men’s tennis will be appearing at the Caja Mágica to fight for the title, as from the 2nd of May, in the thirteenth edition of the Madrid tournament.

All the players at the top of the ATP ranking have confirmed their presence in the Spanish capital to delight the crowds who turn out at the Caja Mágica to see their favourite tennis players in action. Rafael Nadal, the men’s world number one and defending champion, will be among the hot favourites to lift the trophy once again.

Meanwhile, last year’s runner-up and recent champion of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, Stanislas Wawrinka, is on the list of contenders, which also includes players of the stature of Novak Djokovic. The Serbian’s attendance is of particular interest because he will be at the tournament despite picking up a wrist injury at the Monaco tournament. David Ferrer and Roger Federer will also grace the clay courts in the Spanish capital as some of the favourites to reach the final rounds. The only significant absence from the 2014 Mutua Madrid Open will be that of the Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro, who will not be able to play in the tournament having recently undergone an operation on a wrist injury.

In addition, the Spanish Armada will be well represented by Nicolás Almagro, Pablo Andújar, Tommy Robredo, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano López. While Roberto Bautista, who reached the last sixteen in the Australian Open; Pablo Carreño, winner of six Challenger tournaments; and the Romanian Marius Copil, who played in the Mutua Madrid Open last year, have all received wild cards for the men’s main draw. Roberto Carballés, Daniel Muñoz de la Nava, Lucas Pouille and Russian player Karen Khachanov, will be playing in the qualifying stage of the tournament, also on wild cards.
