LAUREL SPRINGS SCHOOL SENDS MORE THAN 50 PLAYERS TO ASICS EASTER BOWL, INCLUDING TOP SEEDS FRANCIS TIAFOE AND EVAN ZHU
Laurel Springs School supports our student athletes in many ways, and our school is proud to sponsor the 47th annual ASICS Easter Bowl tennis tournament in Indian Wells, CA. The 18 singles boys and girls main draw begin Monday, April 7, and finishes on Sunday, April 13.
The Easter Bowl 18 singles is an ITF Grade B1 and USTA Level 1 event. This year’s tournament will include the top 12-and-under players from across the United States. The host facility, Indian Wells Tennis Garden, features 29 hard courts. Please visit Laurel Springs School at our table near the registration center.
The featured event of the ASICS Easter Bowl this year will be the Laurel Springs School Players Party on Wednesday, April 9. All players, parents, and coaches are encouraged to attend.
The Laurel Springs student body includes many elite tennis players, and more than 50 Laurel Springs students are competing at this year’s Easter Bowl. Included in our lineup are:
· Francis Tiafoe – #1 seed, boys’ 18 singles
· Evan Zhu – #1 seed, boys’ 16 singles
· Samantha Martinelli – #10 seed, girls’ 16 singles
· Ellyse Hamlin – #15 seed, girls’ 18 singles
· Robert Levine – #15 seed, boys’ 18 singles
· William Woodall – #16 seed, boys’ 14 singles
Laurel Springs School offers many NCAA-approved courses as part of a rigorous college prep experience that is flexible enough to accommodate busy student athletes. Francis Tiafoe said, “The flexibility that Laurel Springs offers is very helpful, especially when we are traveling. Traveling makes it tough to keep up with our schoolwork and in a traditional school we couldn’t travel as much as we wanted to [while competing].” Evan Zhu said, “My favorite thing about going to school at Laurel Springs is that I can do tennis whenever I want. With other schools you have to schedule your tennis based on your school time. With Laurel Springs, we can practice and do schoolwork on our own schedule.”
Coaches also appreciate what Laurel Springs School offers elite junior tennis players. Top coach Frank Salazar of the Junior Tennis Champions Center said:
“I try to integrate education and training, and both of those things demand a lot of attention. The online learning program [with Laurel Springs] is based on the kids having to be independent. The students’ main aspiration is to try to become professional tennis players, but I explain the importance of education, which is really important for them to understand. Tennis is a vehicle, but at the end of the day, their education is far more important.
Some of our players opt to turn professional, so their education stops after high school. But a college player that comes to mind is Junior Ore. He went through Laurel Springs School and ranked 12th in the world in junior tennis. Laurel Springs gave him the ability and the opportunity to succeed. He was on such a heavy travel schedule, and he had to finish school within a certain amount of time to be eligible to attend an NCAA college. Laurel Springs helped make him a success story because he was able to travel and play the tournament schedule. And now Junior is playing on a full scholarship at Texas A&M.”
