Argentine tennis hero Juan Del Potro has emerged successfully from surgery on his left wrist. “Hi everyone, everything went fine in the operation,” the player said on his Facebook page. “Many thanks for the best wishes from everyone.”
Del Potro has been suffering the left wrist problems since the start of the year, first feeling pain in his opening match at the Australian Open a few days after winning the Sydney title. Despite trying to play, he was forced to pull out of tournaments in Dubai, and the pair of March Masters 1000s in Indian Wells and Miami.
Del Potro underwent right wrist surgery shortly after beating Roger Federer in the 2009 US Open final and missed much of 2010.
Del Potro published a photo of himself, coach Franco Davin and Dr. Richard Berger, who performed the surgery.
Argentine media reported the operation lasted for more than two hours, with recuperation and rehab expected to take up to six months. The added that the procedure was not as complex as his previous operation. In a best case scenario, the 2009 US open winner could be back on court in October for title defenses in Tokyo and Basel.
The surgeon who performed wrist surgery on world no.8 Juan Martin Del Potro yesterday in Minnesota discovered far greater damage to the joint than was expected but there are still hopes the Argentine could be back in action before the end of the year.
A statement from Jorge Viale, Del Potro’s publicist, read: “Juan Martin underwent surgery on his left wrist today at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota by Dr. Richard Berger. During the operation, it was discovered that the damage to his wrist ligaments was worse than expected based upon the high resolution imaging obtained before the surgery.
“Even so, the surgery went very well and as planned. The damaged ligaments were repaired and reinforced. The surgery did not require hospitalization and Juan Martin is recovering comfortably.
“It is expected that he will make a full recovery and on schedule as originally planned. Dr. Berger did note, however, that “Given the degree of damage that was discovered in Juan Martin’s wrist, it is amazing he was able to play at all. It is the result of his passion for the sport, his drive to play well and his strength that he was able to last this long. I can’t wait to see him play at full strength again.”
