Judy Murray A Really Great Tennis Mom 365 Days A Year

Judy Murray has admitted that critical 2011 remarks from Boris Becker over her son Andy’s lack of major success at the time can still be hurtful. The British Fed Cup captain and mother of the current Wimbledon winner used British Mother’s Day to make her feeling known.

Becker said that Murray’s lacks of title was due to what he felt was a clinging relationship between mother and son, with Judy acting as Andy’s first coach back in the day and remaining in the background of his ATP career. The treble Wimbledon champion German said that Andy would not win a grand slam with his mother part of the coaching arrangement.

With Murray now holding the Olympic gold medal and the All England Club honours, that’s not the case anymore. But the Murray mum wanted to set the record straight for the Herald Scotland newspaper.

“But I’ve probably been able to show in the last couple of years that I’m not just Andy Murray’s mum, I have got lots of other things that I do myself and I don’t just travel around the world telling my son what to do, which is what people were saying at one point.

“That was very tough. I still think that if I’d been the father of sons I don’t think I’d have been noticed. I think there is something about this mother thing, or strong woman thing, or competitive woman thing.

“I have no idea when the TV cameras or press cameras are on me but the ones they choose to show are the ones when I’m sort of gritting my teeth or pumping my fist or whatever, which make me look like I’m some kind of over-competitive dragon.

“I go to about six or seven tournaments a year and if I didn’t go to the tournaments I wouldn’t see my son, because he hardly ever gets a chance to come back to Scotland and the players need emotional support,” she said.

“I should never have to apologize for supporting my son, but the problem with Boris saying it was that it was in one paper one day and then the next, it was in every paper. In a number of the Scottish papers, it was in the headlines on the front page and it was making it look like I was the reason he wasn’t winning a grand slam and that I was the worst thing since sliced bread.

“I was kind of having to reassure myself in exactly the same way as I handled it with Andy over the years when he’d been criticized a lot in the media. But it was very hurtful.”
