Some players just never lose that winning habit and after becoming an unlikely doubles champion at Miami’s Sony Open again, 17 years after first winning the singles title at the Florida event, Martina Hingis is gearing up to play many more events on this season’s WTA calendar.
Hingis made a late decision to team up with Sabine Lisicki, the German she has been coaching this year, and the wild-carded pair were victorious in the Miami doubles final against the second seeded Russian duo of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
The title was 33-year-old Hingis’s first since winning the doubles in Doha in 2007 and after a stuttering doubles comeback last year alongside Daniela Hantuchova, the winner of 14Grand Slam titles ( five singles and nine doubles) is re-energized.
“Two weeks ago if you asked me, I probably would have had a completely different answer,’ said Hingis, when asked about her future plans. “Last week, I was like, I’m not sure if I want to put myself out there like this and lose first, second round.
“Now after this victory, things have definitely changed. I would be very happy to continue to play some more doubles of course. It’s very exciting.”
Miami was only Hingis and Lisicki’s second tournament together, after they lost in the first round in Indian Wells, and the pair saved seven match points in their quarter-final against Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova.
However the duo won the last seven points of the deciding super tie-break against sixth seeds Makarova and Vesnina to win the final 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 and give Hingis her 38th WTA doubles title.
Hingis enthused: “When you convert the match point, you’re like, ‘Yes, we did it!’ It’s amazing.”
She won the singles title in 1997, beating Monica Seles in the final, and again 2000 against Lindsay Davenport. Partnering Jana Novotna, Hingis was previously Miami doubles champion in 1998 and 1999. She has now moved to 60th in the new doubles world rankings, from 173rd place, while Lisicki has becomes the world’s 36th best female doubles player.
