Novak Djokovic vigorously denies that new coach Boris Becker is a jinx on his game despite having lost this season at the first two events where he was joined by the German. With Becker absent due to hip surgery, Djokovic resumed his winning pace by taking the Indian Wells title this month over Roger Federer.
People started talking because I lost in Australia (quarter-final against Stan Wawrinka and Dubai &semi-final against Roger Federer), both when Boris was present, They started questioning if he’s the right person to be next to me, said the world No. 2 Serb.
But Djokovic says he remains firm in his December choice of the three-time Wimbledon champion as his joint coach along with long time mentor Marian Vajda, who wants to travel less. Despite the wish to be closer to his family, Vajda answered the call when Becker was unable to make the American hardcourt trip after having hip surgery in Europe, form which he is now recovering.
“Boris from this year is a half coach in my team, and Marian is a second coach. But Marian knows me for so many years, and luckily for me Marian accepted to be here with me in Miami because of the specific situation with Boris.”
Djokovic says Becker will be back by Monte Carlo, which begins in a fortnight, “I’m sure he’s the right choice. I talked with Marian several times about it, “said Djokovic. “I’m really am excited to have such a tennis legend in my team, and he can definitely contribute in a positive way to my team.”
Djokovic says that the hip op will also help his new coach’s game, with the ailing Becker barely able to bat a ball across the net during training sessions at the Australian Open. “I was talking to him about eventually next time we are going to hit, or actually first time we’re gonna hit, because I haven’t seen him playing a lot of tennis in the last couple years,” said Djokovic. “He told me that for grass courts, he’ll be ready, serve and volley. I look forward to that.”
