2) N Djokovic def. (1) R Nadal 6-3 6-3
If the purpose of the lesser events is to set the tone for Slams, Rafael Nadal is hearing sirens. This was about as one-sided as a Nadal/Djokovic match can be. It took only an hour and 23 minutes (a very short contest by their standards), and Djokovic won 60% of the points. He broke three times; he saved the only break point he faced.
Which leaves Nadal still without a major title this year. He won Doha to start the year; he won Rio de Janeiro. But those are minor. He’s 10-0 at optional events, but only 11-3 at the big ones. Djokovic, on the other hand, is 16-2 this year, with two titles, and both titles — Indian Wells and Miami — are big. And he’s won this event four times. Nadal has never won it at all.
In the short term, of course, it doesn’t matter; Nadal remains #1 and Djokovic #2. Nadal’s lead is still almost 2000 points. And we’re going into the clay season, where Nadal will surely continue to clean up. But Nadal has 5100 points to defend in the clay season; Djokovic, only 1910. It’s likely that Djokovic will narrow the gap between them during the clay season. And if Djokovic continues to play like this once the hardcourt season rolls around, Nadal will be in big trouble this summer.
On second thought, that may not have been a siren we heard. Maybe it was a bell tolling.
