Nadal To Play Djokovic In Finals Of Miami, Both Win by "Walkovers"

Singles – Semifinal: (2) N Djokovic def. (20) K Nishikori walkover (groin)

Not much to say about this except that Kei Nishikori waited until about two hours before his match to pull it. We’ll have to see if he can play Davis Cup. The loss means that he will leave here at #18.

Djokovic has now had two walkovers and has played only three matches here!

Singles – Semifinal: (1) R Nadal def. (7) T Berdych walkover (gastroenteritis)

No, we couldn’t believe it either, when this result came through (about four hours after the preceding). But consider this: We had five seeds withdraw here: Berdych, del Potro, Haas, Nishikori, and Mayer. Even by modern standards, that’s an extreme rate. Tomas Berdych lasted long enough to reach #5, but this means that it will be Roger Federer, not Berdych, who has the #4 ranking. Rafael Nadal will of course be #1.

This obviously meant that the day’s only action was women’s doubles. Good thing they at least had that!
