A bomb scare caused by a suspicious back pack last night halted the tennis and caused major lockdown at Miami’s Sony Open on Key Biscayne.
The back pack was left at the front entrance of the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and Miami-Dade Police reacted quickly to investigate and protect spectators in line with normal anti-terrorist procedure.
Miami-Dade Police’s Bomb Squad was activated but pedestrians were not allowed to enter or leave the area during the hour-long lockdown. Four-lane traffic was halted in both directions in front of the complex, causing a huge traffic build up on Key Biscayne.
However Eventually the Tennis Center was officially declared safe at 9:30pm but play continued little more than 150 yards away on the Stadium Court as Serena Williams on to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Angelique Kerber.
“Scary,” said Williams. “There was a bomb threat and a lockdown but that’s all I know about it.”
Several fans who tried to enter the facility during the lockdown enquired about potential refunds for previously purchased tickets. Local resident Jamie Isicoff told the Miami Herald newspaper: “They’re not suspending play, but they’re not letting us in,” said, of Miami. “I don’t think that’s fair. We’re stuck here behind three rows of caution tape and they’re telling us that there’s no refund.”
