TODAY’S WOMEN’S NEWS ******
Miami
The five leading women’s seeds all won, led by Serena Williams, who beat Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1. Williams was finally satisfied after some patchy performances on court.
“I was really struggling my first two matches, so I just wanted to have a better performance today,” the world number one said. “I knew I couldn’t get worse. Going into the match I knew I could only do better. That kind of helped out.”
Second seed Li Na defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-2 in what the Chinese considered a bit of a surprise. “I was a little bit surprised, because last time I meet her it was like a long, tough match.”
No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska fought through a battle with Elina Svitolina, smashing a racquet after losing the second set but posting a 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 win. Maria Sharapova struggled for the second straight match but ended with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory Monday over Belgian Kirsten Flipkens to escape into the quarter-finals. German fifth seed Angelique Kerber put out
Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Eighth seed Petra Kvitova humbled Ana Ivanovic, the No. 12 from Serbia, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0. Eighth seed Petra Kvitova defeated 12th seed Ana Ivanovic 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 and No. 11 Caroline Wozniacki hammered American Varvara Lepchenko 6-0, 6-1.
“Flip” played her best match yet against Maria Sharapova. “Flipper ” took the first set in 32 minutes. Interesting that 10sballs.com passed on patches this year. It would have made our buddy Sven feel very uncomfortable. The patches are great exposure. I would highly recommend them to anyone marketing in tennis. I would also recommend that the powers that be on WTA/ ATP boards ease up on patch rules and regs and sizes . In our case our great EPA photographers around the globe are relieved. They were always trying to help us out with photos of our players in patches. We miss them because we remember what it felt like when Xavier Malisse and Elena Baltacha wore our patches. And Flipkens and Bemelmans and our special buddy Donald Young jr. The biggest walking billboard was the one and only Dusan Vemic. We thank them all for helping the site grow.
