Miami
Singles – Second Round (Late Saturday): (1) R Nadal def. L Hewitt 6-1 6-3
Lleyton Hewitt has 600 career match wins, but on Saturday, he had no answers. Rafael Nadal frankly dominated him; if Nadal played at the pace of a normal player, it would have been over in less than an hour. As it was, it barely exceeded that mark. And it’s all free points for Nadal, so he strengthens his grip on the #1 ranking. Hewitt will be around #45.
Singles – Third Round: (2) N Djokovic def. (30) F Mayer walkover (groin)
Florian Mayer actually withdrew on Saturday, but it wasn’t announced until the end of play. At the time of the withdrawal, Mayer was clinging to #30 in safe points, but there were still several players with chances to pass him.
Singles – Third Round: (5) R Federer def. (Q) T de Bakker 6-3 6-3
Another small but solid step toward the Top Four for Roger Federer. It’s getting close to certain he’ll make it; the only two players who could catch him are David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych, and Ferrer needs a final (one more win by Federer and Ferrer would need a title); Berdych already needs a title.
Singles – Third Round: (6) A Murray def. (32) F Lopez 6-4 6-1
Finally Andy Murray really got things working — but he’s still a weak #8 in safe points. (Of course, with Juan Martin del Potro done for the year, he’s a de facto #7.) He leaves Feliciano Lopez just below the Top Thirty.
Singles – Third Round: (9) R Gasquet def. (17) K Anderson 6-3 6-4
Kevin Anderson loses his chance to rise above his current #18. Richard Gasquet slightly improves his chances of staying Top Ten, but he still trails John Isner in the contest for #9.
Singles – Third Round: (11) J Tsonga def. (WC) M Baghdatis 4-6 7-6(8-6) 7-5
It really does seem as if Marcos Baghdatis has finally turned things around. Just… not quite enough. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moves back ahead of Milos Raonic in the contest for a Top Ten spot, but he still trails Gasquet — and, of course, Raonic has yet to play his third round match.
Singles – Third Round: (20) K Nishikori def. G Dimitrov 7-6(7-1) 7-5
The first five matches played on Saturday (six, if you count the Djokovic walkover) all went to the higher-ranked player. This was the day’s first surprise, and it just might suffice to put Kei Nishikori in the Top Twenty. Grigor Dimitrov is likely to be Top Fifteen, but this costs him the chance to clinch.
Singles – Third Round: (16) T Robredo def. J Benneteau 6-3 6-4
Quite a nice win for Tommy Robredo, given the surface. His Top Fifteen spot is certain in practice. Julien Benneteau we show right at #50 in safe points — which of course leaves a faint possibility he could fall lower.
Doubles – Second Round: (5) Marrero/Verdasco def. Kubot/Lindstedt 7-6(7-2) 7-6(10-8)
Maybe Kubot/Lindstedt shouldn’t have been seeded after all. Outside the tiebreaks, they actually won more points than Marrero/Verdasco, but when it really counted, they couldn’t do anything. As witness their record of nine break chances, zero conversions. (Of course, Marrero/Verdasco were also 0-for-9. It’s a good thing they have tiebreaks, or this might never have ended.)
Doubles – Second Round: Cabal/Farah def. (7) Bopanna/Qureshi 6-2 6-4
This is definitely looking like a breakthrough year for Cabal/Farah. Can they earn a seed at Roland Garros? It’s looking quite likely.
Doubles – Second Round: (8) Llodra/Mahut def. Rosol/Zeballos 6-3 6-0
