Common sense finally seems to have prevailed as world no.8 Juan Martin Del Potro has withdrawn from the Sony Open in Miami with an ongoing problem in his left wrist.
The 25 year-old Argentine has been suffering from the injury since the Australian Open. He was in agony while playing the Dubai Duty Free Championships before retiring in his match against Somdev Devvarman and then tried to contest the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells but realized the pain was still too much when playing doubles and subsequently withdrew from the singles tournament.
Del Potro is under the supervision respected orthopedic surgeon Dr Richard Berger at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and is desperately trying to avoid surgery. He underwent a career saving operation on his right wrist in 2010 and could only play three tournaments that year. However he has been receiving injections in his left wrist since last September’s US Open.
Using Facebook, Del Potro broke the news of his decision, saying: “During these days I was training at the Crandon Park and followed the treatment to try to play in Miami, but I still feel pain in my left wrist and I don’t feel competitive to go on court.”
“It’s a pity because this is a special tournament for me since there are many Latin fans and Argentines in particular. “In the next few days I will visit my doctor again to determine the following steps.”
Del Potro withdrew from the Sony Open after the draw for the men’s singles was made. Therefore Germany’s Benjamin Becker is promoted into his place as a lucky loser and gets the benefit of a first round bye.
