The Andy Murray/Ivan Lendl relationship as player and celebrity coach, that set the trend for Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and several other top flight players to follow, sensationally came to an end today with the news the pair are to part after an exemplary two years that realized Olympic gold, the US Open and Wimbledon titles.

Murray and Lendl have not seen each other since the 26 year-old Scot lost in the Australian Open quarterfinals nearly two months ago and we due to hook up again this week in Miami.

However Murray’s own management company 77 announced the news that the pair, most noticeably not together in Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open, had decided to go their separate ways.

In a statement issued by 77, Murray said: “I’m eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work. We’ve learned a lot as a team and it will be of benefit in the future.”

Lendl, who recently has been playing PowerShares tour commitments in Kansas, Oklahoma, Nashville and Charlotte as well as World Tennis Day in London, responded by saying: “Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience. He is a first-class guy.”

The 54 year-old American naturalized Czech, who stepped away from tennis for the best part of a decade and a half before taking the job with Murray on New Year’s Eve 2011, added: “Having helped him achieve his goal of winning major titles, I feel it is time for me to concentrate on some of my own projects including playing more events around the world which I am really enjoying.

“I will always be in Andy’s corner and wish him nothing but great success as he too goes into a new phase of his career.”

So Murray must go into the defence of the Sony Open title with only his long-time friend and travelling companion Dani Vellverdu along with trainer Jez Green and chiropractor Marc Bender for support. The world no.6 is understood to be planning to take time before considering his next step.

However 2014 so far has not been a particularly happy time for Murray as he has struggled to recapture his top form after undergoing back surgery at the end of September and missing the remainder of last season.

After the success attained by Murray with Lendl, and the improved ability to deal with pressure situations, Djokovic appointed Boris Becker as head coach while Federer co-opted Stefan Edberg onto his back up team. Marin Cilic is now working with Goran Ivanisevic, Michael Chang is guiding Kei Nishikori and Sergi Bruguera is with Richard Gasquet.
