Andy Murray enjoys two things above all others in tennis, winning major trophies and working hard in preparation for such triumphs. And the Wimbledon champion who, by his own admission is still some way short of recapturing his best form after back surgery late last year, has been utilizing the last few days away from the public gaze to put in the hard yards.
Murray headed for his Miami apartment on Biscayne Boulevard and the familiarity of his regular training base at Crandon Park as soon as he lost to Milos Raonic in last week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
He linked up again with Ivan Lendl after the coach completed his veteran obligations on the PowerShares Series and Team Murray has been hard at work for the past four days.
“The best way to get over results like the one at Indian Wells or to get better is to get on the practice court, get in the gym and put work in and that often gives you confidence,’ said Murray.
“I’ve played a lot of matches in the last few weeks and months but I haven’t spent so much time in the gym or loads of time practicing different things. I’ve just been getting my match fitness back up and now that I’m match fit, maybe I need to get back on the practice court and work on a number of things.”
Murray had to fight in his two initial matches at Indian Wells against the Czech pair of Lukas Rosol and Jiri Vesely before losing out to Raonic. His touch seemed noticeably absent, particularly on the drop shots, and his trademark double-handed backhand drive down the line was also out of sorts.
But the Scot said: “It’s certainly not just one aspect of my game that I’m not happy with, there’s a few things that I’d like to do better. It doesn’t matter how well or how pretty your matches are, or how well you hit the ball. It’s about winning tennis matches.”
Murray has spent more time in Miami of late than he has in Britain. But he is prepared to make the sacrifice and knows there is no short cut to success. “It’s like that in every sport,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how good the football or the tennis looks, it’s about winning and getting yourself in winning positions and I’ve done that.
“Against Raonic I got myself in a good position and I blew it. That’s the frustrating thing because whether I’m hitting the ball unbelievable or not so well, you need to still find a way to win matches and I had that opportunity and I didn’t take it.”
