Roger Federer did not participate in last year’s Sony Open Tennis tournament and this time around he is coming off long fortnight in Indian Wells, where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic. Federer lost Sunday’s BNP Paribas Open final 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) after two hours and 12 minutes.
The 32-year-old Swiss traveled to Miami on Sunday night and said it is “more likely” than not that he will play in the tournament. He admitted, however, that if he feels too tired that he could return to Switzerland and prepare for a Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against Kazakhstan.
“It’s encouraging for Miami and for the rest of the season, no doubt,” Federer said of his Indian Wells performance.
On the women’s side, a far less competitive title match saw Flavia Pennetta cruise past Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-1. Radwanska was seriously hampered by a knee injury that has her in doubt for Miami.
“It actually happened a few days ago, but I didn’t expect it was going to be much worse today,” the runner-up explained. “I really tried everything I could to push myself and play 100 percent today, because this is the final, but unfortunately I was in too much pain.
“It was still a good two weeks for me. My first final here, a big event, and still a good result. Of course I will have a lot of treatment and do everything to be ready for Miami.”
