Singles – Semifinal: (2) N Djokovic def. (12) J Isner 7-5 6-7(2-7) 6-1
This was one of those rare matches that was, if anything, less close than the score. Novak Djokovic didn’t lose a single point in his first three service games; John Isner’s only real hope was to keep holding himself and hope to get lucky in a tiebreak. But that’s a tough strategy to play…. Happily for him, things got closer in the second set; Isner even managed to break as Djokovic served for the match, and then won the tiebreak. In the third set, both guys were really struggling on second serve. But Isner was also struggling with his first serve, and it cost him a early break that stood up — he had the trainer working on his knee by then.
Despite the loss, Isner should hit the Top Ten. Djokovic will remain at #2 no matter what, but a title would put him only a little more than 2000 points behind Rafael Nadal — and would earn him revenge on Roger Federer for Federer’s win two weeks ago at Dubai.
Singles – Semifinal: (7) R Federer def. (28) A Dolgopolov 6-3 6-1
The amazing Roger Federer comeback continues. Alexandr Dolgopolov has been playing very well, despite all the troubles at home in Ukraine (something he mentioned after the match) — but it took Federer just over an hour to finish him off, and Federer never faced a break point. Federer is still at #5 in the rankings, but a title would make him #4. Dolgopolov appears to be at #23.
Doubles – Final: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (2) Peya/Soares 6-4 6-3
The Bryans really do seem back on track this year, with two titles in the last four weeks — first Delray Beach and now this. For Mike, that’s title #97 of his career (Bob has 95); it really does look as if Mike at least will reach #100 this year. It doesn’t help their rankings, since they were defending champions — but their #1 spots are in no danger. Especially if they can keep beating Peya/Soares, the world’s #2 team. Peya/Soares are still looking for their first title of the year, having now lost three finals in 2014.
