More Than 431,527 Fans Attend The Tournament; More Than 46,000 Downloads Of Tournament App; Classic Series Ticket Packages For 2015 Event On Sale Wednesday
INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 16, 2014 – For the eighth straight year, the BNP Paribas Open, the largest ATP World Tour and WTA combined event, has broken its attendance record. The 2014 event welcomed 431,527 fans to the newly expanded Indian Wells Tennis Garden for two weeks of world-class tennis, including 31,764 for the day session on Saturday, March 8, also a record.
The tournament opened its’ new Stadium 2 – part of a site expansion that included a new entrance off of Washington Avenue, a 19,000 square foot shade structure, additional practice courts, and three marquee restaurants – with the McEnroe Challenge for Charity presented by Esurance. The event on Saturday, March 1 christened the new facility, and also raised $80,000 for local charities.
In addition, the tournament app, which was introduced this year for iPhone and Android platforms, was downloaded more than 46,000 times and recorded almost eight million screen views over the course of the event.
Fans interested in the 2015 edition of the tournament (March 9-22), can begin purchasing tickets Wednesday, March 19 when Classic Series ticket packages go on sale to the public. The Classic Series package includes all 21 sessions of tennis in the Main Stadium and offers the best seat locations and value. The newly opened Stadium 2 will also offer Classic Series packages.
Italian and World No. 21 Flavia Pennetta captured her first BNP Paribas Open title by defeating World No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2, 6-1 in the final. On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic captured his third BNP Paribas Open title (2008, 2011, 2014), overcoming Roger Federer, a four-time former BNP Paribas Open champion (2004-2006, 2012), 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the final.
In doubles, the World No. 1 team of Bob and Mike Bryan captured their second consecutive BNP Paribas Open title. The Southern California native’s defeated the No. 2 seeded team of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-4, 6-3. On the women’s side, No. 1 seeds Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Peng defeated the No. 5 seeds Cara Black and Sania Mirza 7-6 (5), 6-2.
