Alexandr Dolgopolov’s homeland is currently beset with problems but the Ukrainian is reveling in the freedom he is experiencing in California’s Coachella Valley as he has reached the semi-final of a Masters 1000 series tournament for the first time at Indian Wells’ BNP Paribas Open.
Dolgopolov’s third round win over defending champion Rafael Nadal was arguably the best of his career and the 28th seed has followed up impressively against first Fabio Fognini and now 10th-seeded Milos Raonic.
Prior to arrival in Indian Wells, his ranking had improved from world no. 57 to 31 and even if his run comes to a close in tomorrow’s semi-final against Roger Federer, Dolgopolov is projected to rise to a position close to the career high world no.13 he attained in early 2012.
Dolgopolov summed up his success by saying: “I think it’s down to being more mature and happily my game is working in the important moments. I played good for three weeks. I’m quite fresh. I felt good physically today. I don’t think I changed a lot and it’s working good; I’m staying healthy; I’m doing all the things I did but a little bit better.”
Dolgopolov enjoyed a good run on the recent South American swing, reaching the final in Rio de Janiero and the semi-finals in Acapulco. He believes better things are to come and added: “I’m confident enough to come out and play good tennis. Then who knows? I beat a lot of good players around here, so I wouldn’t see why not win more matches.
“I’ll just come out, do my best, and of course it’s going to be really tough because it’s semis or finals. No bad players left and no players not in the top form now.”
