Roger Federer is clearly reveling in the luxury of having his boyhood hero Stefan Edberg as an occasional coach. So much so that the pair have announced the cooperation will last until at least the end of 2014.

Most recently Edberg spent a week with Federer in Indian Wells, helping the 32 year-old Swiss to acclimatize after the long journey that followed a title victory at the Dubai Duty Free Championships and then preparing him for the initial rounds of the BNP Paribas Open.

Edberg then to fly back to his native Sweden to contest the Tournament of Kings in Stockholm, part of the ATP Champions tour, while Federer progressed through and currently stands in the quarterfinals of the first Masters 1000 series event of the year.

The Swede is clearly enjoying the liaison and in Sweden he told the newspaper Expressen: “We have told each other to try to keep the cooperation for the rest of the year. It’s all confirmed.”

Clearly the relationship is a relaxed one and Federer has repeatedly stressed that Severin Luthi, the Swiss Davis Cup captain, is his prominent coach with Edberg adding his expertise at relevant times.

Edberg added: “We have done the first part, and from now on it will be more flexible. It’s good for both parts, so we don’t get too locked up. Now we have something to build on depending on what happens in the future.”

In Dubai Federer confirmed the relationship benefits both parties. “When I’m with Stefan, I’m really with him,” he said. “When I’m away from him, I want him to enjoy his life. I don’t want to be crazy like calling each other all the time and talking about nothing.

“I hope he likes what he sees and from my standpoint, I’m just very happy things are working out with Stefan and Severin and everybody involved. I also hope that my results remain positive, which is important right now at the beginning of the season.”
