After Inspiring Federer, Edberg Targets Title Defence

Fresh from inspiring Roger Federer to some of his best tennis in years, six-time Grand Slam champion Stefan Edberg will try to defend his Kings of Tennis title in Stockholm, Sweden, starting on Tuesday.

Edberg, who has coached Federer since the turn of the year and flew in to Stockholm from Indian Wells, will take on fellow Swede and former World No.1 Mats Wilander, and Henri Leconte in round-robin play. The winner of that group will play the top player in Group B – either 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya, former World No.1 Marcelo Rios, or Tournament Director Thomas Enqivst in the final.

Since Edberg started coaching Federer, the 17-time Grand Slam champion has beaten Jo Wilfried Tsonga and the Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in Melbourne, and Novak Djokovic on his way to the title in Dubai.

Wilander has coached Marat Safin and Paul Henri Mathieu in the past, but these days he runs Wilander on Wheels – driving around to different parts of the world to give tennis clinics, and commentates with distinction for Eurosport.

The tournament kicks off with Edberg against Leconte, and then Rios vs. Enqvist on Tuesday evening.
