The “Thiem” is Dominic…Big Hitting Dominic Thiem powers his way through another win!
I headed out to court 5 to watch Thiem play my old pal Gilles Simon who I had been a practice partner with the last time I was here in 2012. As impressive as Thiem looked in his last matches, this would be a tough test. With some big shots out of the gate Thiem raced to a 3-0 lead. But Simon is no slouch and managed to sink his teeth in a bit and level the match. I thought Simon might be able to pull away but it didn’t phase Thiem as he just kept slugging away which is impressive as sometimes time? When you lose an early lead against a much higher ranked opponent you start to lose confidence in your shots and start holding back. They both held strong on their serve and with some scrappy play from Simon they went into a tie-breaker with an uncharacteristic double fault from Simon and a few big serves helped Thiem to pull off the first set. Then, obviously not happy with taking just one set from a player like Simon, Thiem dropped the hammer to pull off the second set 6-1 serving it out with a backhand up the line winner and 2 Aces!!!
After the match I headed back to the lounge where I had a bite to eat before going to the gym to work on the recovery program the physios had given. It’s really cool working out surrounded by top players, getting to see all the work they put in off the court, its Full ON and Intense! Can’t wait to bring back some new exercises to Singapore to share with my father and players at his academy there, “Karosi Tennis.” After my workout I headed to the physios again to have my hip worked on by the trainers. I’ve been spending a lot of time in the physios room this last week and realized just what these guys are playing and putting their bodies through on tour.
It’s packed every time I go in there having their injuries treated and being worked on, everything from ankles being taped up to neck and shoulder, wrist, abdominals, back, hamstring and blisters. Under their tennis clothes these guys are walking billboards for medical and sport tapes. It makes you think twice before taking a day off training because of some little aches and pains.
I showered up after and went to watch the last match of the night with my mom on Stadium 2 when it finished we met up with the Bowers at Piero’s PizzaVino. We had a fantastic meal it’s right on site.
