The same wrist problem that forced Juan Martin Del Potro to retire from a first-round match in Dubai has caused him to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open. Del Potro, the No. 6 seed scheduled to play the third match on Stadium 1 against Feliciano Lopez, held a press conference on Sunday morning to announce his decision.
“Every day I feel pain,” the Argentine lamented. “I’m trying to be careful. If the doctor says don’t play this tournament. I believe his word. We are trying to be smart. Sometimes it is better to lose a tournament than to lose a year.”
Del Potro’s doctor is with him Indian Wells and he will remain in the United States for treatment and also practice before what he hopes will be an appearance at the Sony Open later this month.
“My focus now is to do everything possible to play Miami,” he said.
