Indian Wells

Singles – Second Round: (1) R Nadal def. R Stepanek 2-6 6-4 7-5
Rafael Nadal extends his winning streak here to seven, but it hardly matters in terms of rankings; he was sure to stay #1. Radek Stepanek adds a few points but will remain around #50.

Singles – Second Round: (3) S Wawrinka def. I Karlovic 6-3 7-5
Stanislas Wawrinka had almost as many aces (eight) as had Ivo Karlovic (nine), and Karlovic won’t win many matches that way! The loss means he won’t quite make the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (5) A Murray def. L Rosol 4-6 6-3 6-2
Andy Murray continues to play below his abilities, but as long as he can keep up with Tomas Berdych, he should hit the Top Five before Miami.

Singles – Second Round: (7) R Federer def. (Q) P Mathieu 6-2 7-6(7-5)
This would probably have been a lot more interesting had it taken place seven or eight years ago. Paul-Henri Mathieu and Roger Federer are both 32, but even with Federer’s recent struggles, there is no question about which one has aged better — the second set was close only because Federer had a little letdown as he served for the match. For Federer, this represents another small step toward a likely return to #7 — or perhaps higher.

Singles – Second Round: (10) M Raonic def. E Roger-Vasselin 7-6(7-4) 4-6 7-6(7-2)
Milos Raonic had 33 aces in this match, and he needed every last one of them…. He’s still about 200 points away from the Top Ten. Edouard Roger-Vasselin will remain a little below the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (11) T Haas def. J Chardy 6-3 6-4
Hard to believe that Tommy Haas was the first seed to win here — after all, he was having shoulder problems last week. But he recovered quickly, and keeps himself within reach of the Top Ten. Jeremy Chardy will be close to (probably slightly above) #50.

Singles – Second Round: (13) F Fognini def. (WC) R Harrison 5-7 6-1 6-4
Memo to Ryan Harrison: Never get into a long match with Fabio Fognini. The guy has the stamina of Mount Everest. Fognini hasn’t moved in the rankings yet, and won’t unless he reaches at least the quarterfinal, but with Mikhail Youzhny out (more on this below), the Italian’s Top Fifteen spot is just about secure.

Singles – Second Round: (17) K Anderson def. L Hewitt 7-6(7-5) 6-4
Kevin Anderson still has more than a hundred points to defend, but this makes it certain in practice that he will stay Top Twenty — he might even stay #18. He drops Lleyton Hewitt from #41 to probably #44 or #45. And, of course, Hewitt will have to wait at least another two weeks to earn career victory #600.

Singles – Second Round: A Falla def. (18) J Janowicz 6-3 2-6 7-6(7-5)
This took more than two hours, but Jerzy Janowicz was the first seed to lose here even so. That didn’t immediately cost him his Top Twenty spot, but that was because most of the players around him hadn’t played yet. It seems likely to happen soon.

Singles – Second Round: (19) K Nishikori def. S Giraldo 6-1 6-3
Kei Nishikori defends his points; win one more match and he is likely to hit the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (23) G Monfils def. S Stakhovsky 6-2 6-4
The big 2014 comeback continues for Gael Monfils; his #25 spot now looks safe, and he is likely to gain a spot or two.

Singles – Second Round: (27) D Tursunov def. J Monaco 7-6(7-4) 6-4
It almost seems as if the only way Juan Monaco can win these days is to push a match past the two hour mark, and he fell about ten minutes short this time. Which probably means no Top Forty spot. Dmitry Tursunov moves past Benoit Paire in the rankings, which should clinch his Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: (28) A Dolgopolov def. T Smyczek 7-6(7-3) 6-4
Alexandr Dolgopolov’s big 2014 comeback continues: this ought to put him back in the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (29) A Seppi def. S Querrey 4-6 7-6(7-3) 6-3
This was a contest of two players desperate to get their games back, so we’re not really sure which one it says more about. But Sam Querrey was defending substantial points, so he will be falling below #60.

Singles – Second Round: J Vesely def. (32) P Andujar 6-1 2-6 6-1
Pablo Andujar loses a few points and will remain in the #35 range.

Singles – Second Round: (LL) E Donskoy def. M Russell 6-4 6-3
Evgeny Donskoy made the main draw when Mikhail Youzhny pulled out with a back problem — a withdrawal that may well cost Youzhny his Top Fifteen rankings. Michael Russell obviously got a big chance to return to the Top Hundred as a result — but this appears to mean that he will fall short.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Lipsky/F Mayer 6-1 6-3
No slow start for the Bryans this time….

Doubles – First Round: (2) Peya/Soares def. Butorac/Klaasen 2-6 7-6(7-4) 10-6
A tough first round match for both teams. We’d have thought that Butorac/Klaasen would have been seeded by now, but it looks as if they’ll be waiting a little longer for that….

Doubles – First Round: (7) Nestor/Zimonjic def. Cilic/del Potro 4-6 6-3 10-8
Funny that Juan Martin del Potro signed up for singles and doubles so soon after hurting his wrist. Of course, he didn’t end up playing much doubles….

Doubles – First Round: Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. J Murray/Peers 6-3 4-6 10-5
It’s not often that Andy Murray goes deeper in a doubles draw than does Jamie, because Andy rarely plays without his brother, but it happened here….

Doubles – First Round: Mahut/Tsonga def. Anderson/Haase 7-5 7-6(7-3)

Doubles – First Round: Gulbis/Raonic def. Djokovic/Krajinovic 7-6(7-3) 6-1
Pretty impressive for Milos Raonic, given what he went through in singles — but it makes you wonder what Novak Djokovic was doing….

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Erlich/Gasquet def. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 4-6 7-5 11-9
Which is harder to believe, that Richard Gasquet played doubles, that he played with Jonathan Erlich, or that they beat Fyrstenberg/Matkowski? This was surprising in all sorts of ways…. But you’ll notice that a very large number of Top Ten singles players are in the doubles here: Djokovic, Wawrinka, Del Potro, Murray, Federer, Gasquet, Tsonga… we can’t remember the last time was had that sort of list!
