Indian Wells

Singles – First Round: E Roger-Vasselin def. B Becker 6-4 6-2

Edouard Roger-Vasselin has seen his ranking slide significantly lately, but he wasn’t defending anything this week; this will probably let him gain at least a little.

Singles – First Round: A Falla def. F Delbonis 6-3 6-4

An abrupt end to Federico Delbonis’s five match winning streak. The loss means he can’t hit the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: S Stakhovsky def. L Kubot 6-4 7-5

Sergiy Stakhovsky is Ukrainian — from Kiev, in fact, although he now spends his time in Slovakia. No sign of distraction so far, obviously.

Singles – First Round: T Smyczek def. (WC) J Sock 6-4 1-6 6-4

Mark this down as the first two hour match of the tournament. Also as the first one where the loser won more points (97) than the winner (94).

Singles – First Round: M Russell def. D Young 4-6 6-1 6-2

Too bad the ATP scoreboard doesn’t keep track of the average number of strokes per rally — these two speedsters must have posted impressive numbers in that regard. But Donald Young had horrid second serve numbers, and it cost him seven breaks. This won’t get Michael Russell back into the Top Hundred, but it keeps him close.

Singles – First Round: J Vesely def. I Sijsling 3-6 6-4 7-6(7-1)

Igor Sijsling loses what should have been a pretty good shot at making the Top Fifty; he’ll remain in the #55 range.

Singles – First Round: R Stepanek def. D Istomin 6-1 3-6 6-1

Denis Istomin loses any chance at making the Top Fifty; we’d guess he’ll fall a spot or two. Radek Stepanek hasn’t quite guaranteed that he will stay Top Fifty, but it’s quite likely.

Singles – First Round: L Rosol def. (Q) D Lajovic 6-7(2-7) 7-5 6-4

A tough way to start for Lukas Rosol — but he doesn’t have anything to defend, so his Top Fifty spot should be safe even if he runs out of gas after this.

Singles – First Round: S Giraldo def. D Gimeno-Traver 6-3 4-6 6-4

This took more than two hours — not too atypical on a day when six of the first nine matches took three sets. This might take Santiago Giraldo above #70.

Singles – First Round: L Hewitt def. M Ebden 7-6(7-2) 3-6 6-3

This is career victory #599 for Lleyton Hewitt; whenever he earns his next victory, he will join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as the only active players with 600 or more career wins. That’s a nice milestone — and if he earns it here, it would let him defend his points. But he will need at least two more wins to return to the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (WC) R Harrison def. A Golubev 6-4 7-5

A promising sign for Ryan Harrison as he tries to get back into the Top Hundred, although he’ll need a lot more than this. He leaves Andrei Golubev still around #70.

Singles – First Round: I Karlovic def. A Bogomolov Jr. 6-4 6-4

Ivo Karlovic defends his points from last year. This by itself probably won’t make him Top Fifty, but it won’t take too much more.

Singles – First Round: S Querrey def. (Q) A Kuznetsov 6-3 6-3

Sam Querrey still needs two more wins to defend his points; he’ll need at least one more just to stay above #60.

Singles – First Round: J Chardy def. (WC) R Williams 7-6(7-5) 7-5

Jeremy Chardy isn’t defending anything, so whatever he does here is a bonus — but he hasn’t budged his ranking yet.

Singles – First Round: J Monaco def. (Q) P Polansky 6-4 6-7(5-7) 6-4

Back to being Marathon Man for Juan Monaco. Someone should tell him about this strange concept known as “straight-set wins.” The good news for him is, he wasn’t defending anything, so he’s very close to the Top Forty and won’t need too many more three-setters to make it above that mark.

Singles – First Round: (Q) P Mathieu def. (Q) R Ginepri 6-2 6-3

This one made you feel like it was 2007 or so, didn’t it? Not a very good scoreline for Robby Ginepri, but just making the main draw is promising for him these days. And when one is ranked #311, qualifying points can be worth a lot.
