Ever since Andy Murray emerged on the scene, he has made it clear the French Open and clay present the greatest difficulties for him to play his best tennis, even though he was schooled in the finer points of the game at the Academy Sanchez-Casal in Barcelona.
But now his coach Ivan Lendl believes the back surgery Murray underwent at the end of last September could alleviate the problems Murray felt, that for the most part were in the mind.
Murray did progress to the French Open semi-final in 2011but for the most part he has always insisted that playing on clay aggravated the back condition that eventually forced him to undergo surgical treatment.
Lendl, in London for a re-run of his 1987 Wimbledon final against Pat Cash as part of World Tennis Day at the English capital’s Earl’s Court, maintained: “I think clay is a very good surface for Andy.”
The three times French Open champion continued: “A lot of clay-court matches come down to conditioning, which is his strength, and patience, which is his strength. I see absolutely no reason why he can’t be very successful.”
Lendl has not seen Murray since the pair left Melbourne following the Scot’s Australian Open quarterfinal exit against Roger Federer. And the coach maintained he was not able to catch up with any action in Murray’s Acapulco Open loss to Grigor Dimitrov at the semi-final stage. However he did add travelling coach Dani Vallverdu had informed him it has been Murray’s best showing since his return to competition.
“In the past Andy was always complaining that the back was an issue on clay,” said Lendl. “Hopefully that has gone. And once you’re not afraid or fearful of the pain then you enjoy it more and you get more confidence. It goes together.”
