Acapulco
Singles – Final: (4) G Dimitrov def. (5) K Anderson 7-6(7-1) 3-6 7-6(7-5)
Grigor Dimitrov had had a very late semifinal the night before (all matches at this event take place late; you’d think it was a cartel hiding from public scrutiny). He admitted he didn’t feel too good after that, and when asked how he managed to come back from a break down in the third set of this three hour match, he declared, “Belief is the only thing that kept me going today. I didn’t think I was going to come back after last night’s match. I’m really happy. This title means a lot to me. Every match I played was really tough, especially the last three where I played three sets.”
He’ll have a lot more to believe in after this. It’s his second career title, after Stockholm last year, and his biggest. He beat three seeds, including Andy Murray, to earn it, too, so it’s not some cheapie. It seems clear that there will be more to come.
Especially with his ranking improving. We show him rising to a career-high #16 after this. That means a higher seeding tier at Indian Wells and Miami. He’s now only 650 points from the Top Ten. Given his recent results, and the advantage the new ranking will give him, it looks like a genuine possibility.
Kevin Anderson finds himself without a title for the second straight week. Still, he should rise to #18. And he did get a consolation prize:
Doubles – Final: Anderson/Ebden def. F Lopez/Mirnyi 6-3 6-3
Hard to believe that Kevin Anderson had anything left after the singles, but another hour on the court earned him his first-ever doubles title. It’s #4 for Matthew Ebden, who was duly grateful to his partner: “It was the first time for us playing together. I’ve known Kevin since we were kids. We grew up playing junior tennis together. I was just really thankful that he was able to play through the doubles and the singles. It’s a massive effort by him. I really owe it to him.” But it leaves Max Mirnyi, who had to think this was a big chance for him, still looking for his first doubles title of the year.

Singles – Semifinal: P Lorenzi def. (1) T Haas 6-3 3-2, retired (right shoulder)
Let that be a lesson to all you racquet-smashers.
Halfway through the first set, Tommy Haas demolished a racquet — and somehow demolished his shoulder in the process. After a lot of pain and several medical treatments, he gave up.
( Our question is did he hurt his shoulder before , during , or after breaking the racket ? )
NEXT WEEK ON THE ATP WORLD TOUR:
Indian Wells (1000/Hard). Defending Champion: Rafael Nadal
