Juan Del Potro remains plagued by doubts about his game as he enters the Dubai event with lingering wrist pain and a fragile state of mind. The South American second seed lost a Rotterdam semi-final last weekend and then headed to Dubai for practice and remains worried about his lingering left wrist injury.
With U.S. doctors insisting he can play on his wrist without fear of further injury, the former US Open winner admits that his confidence is ebbing due to the problem which he first felt early in the Australian Open.
“It is getting better but I’ve lost some muscle in my arm and I cannot hit my backhand at 100 per cent. That means my confidence is not at its best. It is all very frustrating. It is up to me to deal with the problem and sometimes it’s not easy to keep going. It’s always in my mind but I will keep on playing.”
Del Potro, winner of the Sydney title to start the season, named Djokovic and Federer as title favorites. “I’m just trying to staying the top five or 10 this season,” said the number five. “And I want to fix this wrist problem as soon as I can, but it takes time.”
