* Dolgopolov ends Fognini’s string of clay finals

* Top three seeds reach Marseille semifinals

* Johnson knocks Lopez out of Top Thirty

****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Rio de Janeiro

Singles – Quarterfinal: A Dolgopolov def. (3) F Fognini 6-1 6-1

The good news is, Fabio Fognini finally gets a day off. Which he needs. Not only has he been playing every week, and going deep in the tournaments, but he was playing mostly three set matches. He probably had more court time than anyone else on the ATP this year — and he ended up getting his shoulder worked on in mid-match. He loses his chance to rise above #14. Alexandr Dolgopolov ought to be back in the Top Fifty after this.

Doubles – Semifinal: Cabal/Farah def. (1) Peya/Soares 6-4 6-2

Cabal/Farah had already posted one upset here, but this is particularly impressive because Bruno Soares is Brazilian.

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Marrero/Melo def. Bracciali/Fognini 6-3 2-6 10-8

At least Fabio Fognini’s shoulder can’t be too bad if he tried to play the doubles.

Marseille

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Gasquet def. (5) I Dodig 7-5 6-3

No points yet for Richard Gasquet (the next win counts), but he leaves Ivan Dodig still below #30 — no better than #33.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) J Tsonga def. (6) E Roger-Vasselin 6-7(3-7) 6-2 6-2

It looks as if Edouard Roger-Vasselin will gain a ranking spot or two, but he remains in the #35 vicinity. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will stay at #10 — after all, he has champion’s points to defend.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) E Gulbis def. (8) N Mahut 6-3 7-6(7-1)

One more win and Ernests Gulbis is Top Twenty. He leaves Nicolas Mahut probably #39 or perhaps #40.

Singles – Quarterfinal: J Struff def. M Llodra 6-4 6-3

Jan-Lennard Struff can’t be making himself too popular around here — first he beat Julien Benneteau, now Michael Llodra. Easily, in fact; this took just about an hour. Struff is getting fairly close to the Top Hundred.

Doubles – Semifinal: Hanley/Marray def. Draganja/M Pavic 6-2 4-6 10-5

It’s only a 250, but does this mean that Paul Hanley is finally starting to have a real doubles comeback?

Delray Beach

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) K Anderson def. M Matosevic 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-3

Kevin Anderson might hit the Top Twenty if he wins his next match — but Marinko Matosevic, who was defending 180 points, is going to drop hard. Certainly well below #60.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) S Johnson def. (6) F Lopez 6-3 6-2

This is looking like a breakthrough year for Steve Johnson. He already has four wins. He’s still far below the Top Hundred, but this will help significantly. And hurt Feliciano Lopez a lot. Lopez was defending finalist points, and will fall from #27 to no better than #36. Wehear that since Stevie switched to Solinco strings he hasn’t lost a match ….

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
