Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) (WC) Serena Williams def. (5) Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-2
It’s interesting to realize that Serena Williams can’t add any points here — her results are so strong that a mere Premier title doesn’t count for her! She drops Jelena Jankovic to #8 — meaning that Simona Halep, despite her injury, will be hitting a new high of #7.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Caroline Wozniacki def. Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-2
This will let Caroline Wozniacki keep the #11 ranking, which is the best she can hope for this week. Sorana Cirstea loses her Top 25 chance.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Venus Williams def. (Q) Flavia Pennetta 6-3 7-5
That ends Flavia Pennetta’s Top Twenty chance. Venus Williams should rise to #35 or so.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Alize Cornet def. Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-3
Carla Suarez Navarro will end up at #15. It looks as if Alize Cornet is up to #23.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kops-Jones/Spears def. (1) Errani/Vinci 6-4 6-1
This makes it quite certain that Errani/Vinci won’t be returning to #1 in doubles any time soon. They are really struggling with consistency.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kudryavtseva/Rodionova def. (2) Makarova/Vesnina 6-4 6-4
Makarova/Vesnina beat the Williams Sisters and can’t beat Kudryavtseva/Rodionova? A crazy place — we now have no seeded teams left. And that’s in what was a pretty strong doubles draw.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hlavackova/Safarova def. Raymond/Zhang 6-3 7-5
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Pennetta/Stosur def. Groenefeld/Rosolska 6-3 7-5

****** TODAY’S FEATURE ******
The Harder They Fall, Part II
Some weeks ago, we did a feature about the 25 biggest upsets of the year 2013. But we can do more with that upset data than just look for the biggest upsets. We can also try to figure out who gets upset the most.
The idea is pretty simple: We sat down and looked at every loss a player suffered, and compared her ranking with that of the player who beat her. If the ratio was greater than 1:1, it was an upset. We then counted the upsets suffered by each player.
Here, then, are the fifty most upset player on the WTA Tour:
1. Kvitova: 18 upsets
1. Vinci: 18 upsets
3. Kerber: 17 upsets
3. Wozniacki: 17 upsets
5. Goerges: 16 upsets
6. Stosur: 15 upsets
7. Barthel: 14 upsets
7. Cibulkova: 14 upsets
7. Cirstea: 14 upsets
7. Flipkens: 14 upsets
7. Radwanska, A: 14 upsets
7. Safarova: 14 upsets
13. Errani: 13 upsets
13. Lepchenko: 13 upsets
15. Bartoli: 12 upsets
15. Begu: 12 upsets
15. Cornet: 12 upsets

15. Mladenovic: 12 upsets
15. Puig: 12 upsets
15. Radwanska, U: 12 upsets
15. Robson: 12 upsets
15. Scheepers: 12 upsets
24. Dolonc: 11 upsets
24. Paszek: 11 upsets
24. Stephens: 11 upsets
24. Suarez Navarro: 11 upsets
28. Beck: 10 upsets
28. Hantuchova: 10 upsets
28. Hsieh: 10 upsets
28. Jankovic: 10 upsets
28. Kirilenko: 10 upsets

49. Peer: 8 upsets
49. Rybarikova: 8 upsets
49. Svitolina: 8 upsets
49. Voegele: 8 upsets
49. Watson: 8 upsets
Figuring out who is least likely to be upset is a trickier matter, because it depends on number of events played. (A player who had only WTA main draw, and lost to a seed, will be listed as having no upsets. Is she really less upsettable than Serena Williams?) But what we can do is take number of upsets and divide by number of events and see what we get. We set a minimum of five WTA events for this. To our surprise, there were fully eleven players who had at least five WTA main draws and were never upset: Baltacha, Barty, Cetkovska, Dulgheru, Foretz Gacon, Glushko, Mayr-Achleitner, Rezai, Schmiedlova, Tomljanovic, and Wozniak. Voskoboeva was upset only once in 18 tries, Burdette only once in 16 — we had to go through about thirty names before we reached our first year-end Top Twenty player. But here are the upset rates for the least upsettable top players (a lower rate means she’s less likely to be upset).
Serena Williams: 19% of matches ended in upsets
Bouchard: 20%
Sharapova: 30%
Pavlyuchenkova: 32%
Vesnina: 33%
Kuznetsova: 33%
Makarova: 33%
Azarenka: 40%
The most upsettable?
Kvitova: 82%
Kerber: 81%
Petrova: 77%
Bartoli: 75%
Woznaicki: 74%
Vinci: 72%
Stosur: 68%
