PRO TOUR NEWS – MEN
* Seppi only seed not to reach Marseille quarterfinal
* Nishikori retires in Delray Beach
* No surprises (yet) in
Rio de Janeiro
Singles – Second Round: (1) R Nadal def. A Montanes 6-1 6-2
Rafael Nadal boosts his lead in the contest for #1. And, perhaps more importantly in practical terms, he stays healthy.
Singles – Second Round: (3) F Fognini def. (PR) P Cuevas 7-6(7-1) 4-6 6-3
This match officially took no time, according to the ATP web site. Somehow we doubt that — Fabio Fognini just doesn’t win quick matches. He needs one more win to earn enough points to count toward his ranking.
Singles – Second Round: A Dolgopolov def. (Q) F Bagnis 6-7(4-7) 6-2 7-6(7-4)
Hard to believe that score, but at least it has Alexandr Dolgopolov on the brink of a Top Fifty return.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Peya/Soares def. Chardy/Dlouhy 6-4 6-1
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Marrero/Melo def. Cuevas/Zeballos 6-1 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Cabal/Farah def. (3) Granollers/M Lopez 6-3 7-5
No sooner do Granollers/Lopez finally win another title than this happens. Although, to give them credit, they lost to a very strong clay team.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Bracciali/Fognini def. (Q) Delbonis/L Mayer 6-4 4-6 10-8
And the Fabio Fognini “just how tired can I make myself?” machine marches on. Although this took a little less than an hour and a half; hardly worth noticing after the singles….
Marseille
Singles – Second Round: (3) E Gulbis def. R Bautista Agut 6-3 5-7 6-4
The points already count for Ernests Gulbis, who might rise as high as #21 after this. But he needs at least a final to hit the Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: M Llodra def. (4) A Seppi 7-6(7-3) 6-4
Is this a sign of a comeback for Michael Llodra, or merely more evidence of Andreas Seppi’s collapse? Seppi wasn’t defending anything, but this means he will remain below the Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: (5) I Dodig def. T Kamke 6-7(4-7) 6-0 6-3
Ivan Dodig adds points, and is now about 75 points from the Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: (6) E Roger-Vasselin def. S Stakhovsky 7-6(7-2) 6-4
This will very likely take Edouard Roger-Vasselin above #35.
Singles – Second Round: (7) J Benneteau def. J Struff 6-4 6-7(3-7) 6-3
Julien Benneteau might yet make it back to the Top Fifty here, but how much longer can he keep up all these long matches?
Singles – Second Round: (8) N Mahut def. (Q) R Berankis 7-6(7-5) 6-3
This might take Nicolas Mahut as high as #38. A career high seems very likely.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin def. Kontinen/Kowalczyk 6-4 6-4
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hanley/Marray def. Cerretani/Shamasdin 6-4 7-6(7-3)
Delray Beach
Singles – Second Round: T Gabashvili def. (3) K Nishikori 4-2, retired
This is the week that Kei Nishikori’s Memphis title comes off, so he will fall hard. This drops him from #15 to no better than #19 — and he might still go slightly lower.
Singles – Second Round: (7) M Cilic def. (WC) R Harrison 6-3 6-4
Marin Cilic’s comeback is going well, but 250 point events aren’t going to help him much. He needs a final to add any more points.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Harrison/Sock def. (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 6-4 7-5
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Groth/Mirnyi def. Bangoura/Mirzadeh 7-6(7-5) 6-4
