****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Delray Beach

Top seed Tommy Haas continued to break barriers at age 35, advancing in his opening match over Wayne Odesnik in well under an hour. “With injuries, I lost probably three or four years of my career,” said the 12th-ranked Haas. “I always felt I wanted to end this on my terms, like when the mind is not there anymore or physically I can’t do it anymore. I just want to continue and enjoy.”

The veteran is saving his best tennis for last in a career which has been marked by long injury absence periods including hip surgery. There was another win on the day for an over-30 as 1999 champion Lleyton Hewitt, seeded eighth, crushed American Bradley Klahn 6-3, 6-1.

No. 2 John Isner overcame compatriot Michael Russell 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 and third and fourth seeds Kei Nishikori – last week’s repeat Memphis champion – and Kevin Anderson both squeezed out victories, with Japan’s Nishikori stopping Gastao Elias 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 while Anderson eliminated Tim Smyczek 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Rhyne Williams won as Alejandro Falla quit trailing 6-3 4-0, Ivo Karlovic defeated Sam Groth 7-6(4), 6-3 and American Ryan Harrison beat an ailing Lu Yen-Hsun 4-6, 1-0. There was a victory for Australian Marinko Matosevic – first first since Sydney at the start of the season – over David Goffin 6-2, 6-4. Other wins went to American Steve Johnson, Marcos Baghdatis and Dudi Sela.

Marseille

The two seeds on court both advanced into the second wound, with No. 5 Croatian Ivan Dodig defeating Albano Olivetti of France 7-5, 6-2 and No. 6 Edouard Roger-Vasselin beating Croatian Ante Pavic 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.

German Tobias Kamke put out one Briaon in Edmund 7-5, 6-1 while Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky accounted for the other a she defeated Dan Evans 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. Russian veteran Nikolay Davydenko moved along in the draw over Dutchman Igor Sijsling, a Rotterdam semi-finalist last week, 6-4 6-4.

Rio De Janeiro

There seems to be no stopping David Ferrer as the second-seeded Spaniard led a quartet of seeds into the second round of an event imported from San Jose to South America as part of the 2016 Olympic buildup. Ferrer, winner of a title last weekend on the continent, began over Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-3.

Third seed Fabio Fognini whose ten-match win streak was ended by a loss to Ferrer in the Buenos Aires final, got back to winning ways as he beat Aljaz Bedene 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-1. Spanish fourth seed Tommy Robredo defeated compatriot Pablo Carreno 7-6(5), 6-3.

The only seeded loser on the day was No. 5 Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who went down 2-6, 6-3, 6-0

Alexandr Dolgopolov. Seventh seed Juan Monaco defeated fellow Argentine Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-1, No. 8 Pablo Andujar eliminated German Julian Reister 6-4, 6-3 while there were wins for Pablo Cuevas, Joao Sousa and Albert Ramos.
