John McEnroe will try his hand again talking sports outside of tennis. In tennis, the now 55 year old is a wanted analyst for every major network given how entertaining he can be, but outside of tennis he has not been so successful. He has signed a contract with ESPN radio.
“Johnny Mac” once hosted his own TV show “McEnroe,” on CNBC, which didn’t last long, and for a period was a panelist on the HBO show “Costas Now”.
According to ESPN it has signed John McEnroe to a radio contract. He already works for ESPN as a tennis TV analyst, but ESPN-98.7 in New York has expressed interest in him.
“Radio is something I really want to pursue,” McEnroe said. “Hopefully we can put our heads together over time and figure out a way to get this done. This (the new contract) is a pretty long one. We can figure out what best suits them and best suits me.”
Interestingly, McEnroe’s brother, Patrick was a weekend fixture on ESPN-98.7 for a long stretch. “I was planning on doing some (radio) work with him, but he has a lot on his plate, so he had to back off a little bit,” John McEnroe said. “We thought we could do something like a ‘Mac&Mac Show.’ And I wouldn’t close the door on something like that happening.”
Patrick also works or ESPN, but is the head of USTA Player Development where he Devotes 10 DAYS A MONTH. ( maybe the USTA players need 30 days a month ? Just saying …….. )
John McEnroe says that he also might be appearing on “SportsCenter” as well as Keith Olbermann’s nightly show. When he worked for CNBC, he struggled. “I found it difficult. I was doing four or five shows a week,” he said. “I found out how much you have to live it and breathe it.”
Editors note: John Mac is no friend to tennis. Especially doubles. He is just another old player bitter at today’s prize money. And really doesn’t the USTA players deserve a head of player development that spends every day on the growth of the game instead of the 10 days a month he has “worked ” since his hiring ?
