Petra Kvitova aimed to try and put aside a month of tennis torment as the 2011 Wimbledon winner vows to recover fitness in time for her title defense at the Dubai WTA tournament starting today.
The sixth-ranked Czech has endured a misery start to 2014, losing in the Australian Open first round to a Thai outsider after little more than a week earlier reaching the Sydney semi-finals. Kvitova then was forced by illness to withdraw from last week’s indoor event in Paris as week as a weekend Fed Cup tie.
For the 23-year-old, things could certainly be going better. A year ago, she won the Dubai title. As she recovered at home from the various viruses and breathing difficulties which have plagued her throughout her career, Kvitova said she is currently trying to kick a persistent sore threat.
“I was meant to take a wild card into Paris, but unfortunately I had to pull out with a sore throat and headache and have been recovering since then back home in the Czech Republic and I’m not playing Fed Cup for my country either,” she told Gulf media.
Off court, Kvitova may be looking form a new dining experience: “I didn’t get to do much around Dubai, just went to some nice restaurants for dinner. I’d like to see Dubai properly one day when I have time.”
Kvitova is seeded third as play begins today behind Serena Williams (1), Agnieszka Radwanska (2) and ahead of Italy’s Sara Errani, Serb Jelena Jankovic and Germany’s Angelique Kerber.
