British women’s tennis needed some good news to balance the delight still being experienced by the male counterparts after the Davis Cup win over the United States in San Diego just over two weeks ago. And Heather Watson is finally igniting more than a few smiles after finally getting her career back on track by winning both singles and doubles titles at the $100,000 second tier ITF Challenger event in Midland, Michigan.

British no.1 Laura Robson continues to be sidelined by the wrist injury that has been troubling her since the off-season. But Watson, the former US Open junior champion who suffered a demoralizing 2013 after contracting glandular fever or mononucleosis early in the year, has now established an unbeaten singles run of nine matches since the Australian Open and beat Russia’s Ksenia Pervak 6-4 6-0 in the Michigan final.

Although Britain missed out on promotion to the Fed Cup’s World Group after the recent Euro/Africa Zone Group One matches staged in Hungary, her ranking is back on the incline after a depressing slump that saw her fall from a career high of 39 almost a year ago to place well outside the top 150. On the back of her Midland win, she rose from 161st spot to 122.

With few ranking points to defend for the rest of the year, a return to the top 100 may not be too far away for the 21 year-old from the Channel Island of Guernsey and she used Twitter to illustrate her joy. “Just won two titles in one day,” reported Watson who successfully partnered Georgian Anna Tatishvili in the doubles after beating her in the second round of the singles. “What have you done with your Sunday?”

Editors note: Great to see the week that Ksenia Pervak had. Thanks to help from her new coach and calming influence Dusan Vemic.
