PRO TOUR NEWS – MEN

FYI: We’re still on Rotterdam time, FYI. Richard Krajicek is a great tournament director ! FYI Happy Valentines Day. It was here in a blink and gone. Hope all the lovers out there had a great day. Geezer and Lovey were @ the wedding of the 1996 Wimbledon Champion and his dear always gorgeous Daphne Deckers. Wow. It’s was intimidate and beautiful. The party was the best ever. The most relaxed and well planned and fun. Congrats to you both for all of your hard work and successful careers from your old friend Global Chick.

* Defending Rotterdam champion del Potro loses to Gulbis; Murray falls to Cilic

* Berdych only seed still standing

* Sijsling surprises Kohlschreiber

* Haase retires in Buenos Aires on easy day for top seeds

* Russell surprises Hewitt in Memphis

Rotterdam

Singles – Quarterfinal: E Gulbis def. (1) J del Potro 6-3 6-4

The wild ride continues…. There may have been something wrong with Juan Martin del Potro, who called the trainer midway through the match. This instantly cost del Potro the #4 ranking; David Ferrer is now #4 in safe points. Del Potro might even fall lower. Ernests Gulbis appears to have risen only one spot, to #23, but if he can do this, what else might he do here?

Singles – Quarterfinal: M Cilic def. (2) (WC) A Murray 6-3 6-4

This was really quite routine — an hour and eleven minutes, and Andy Murray had another bad loss. He loses his chance to return to the Top Five — but Marin Cilic, who has now won eight straight matches, is likely to hit the Top Thirty, and he looks like the favorite to reach the final in the bottom half.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Tomas Berdych def. Jerzy Janowicz 6-7(9-11) 6-2 6-4

This was the day’s first match, so it left Tomas Berdych waiting for Andy Murray to know if he would have any chance to reach #6. As it turns out, he does — it will take a title, but of course he’s now the only seed still in the draw. Jerzy Janowicz will probably move from #20 to #19.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (WC) I Sijsling def. P Kohlshreiber 6-2 2-6 6-1

What a truly, utterly crazy event. Philipp Kohlschreiber may still make the Top 25, but this loss leaves open the possibility that Marin Cilic could pass him. As for Igor Sijsling, he is now on the brink of the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Llodra/Mahut def. (3) Nestor/Zimonjic 6-4 4-6 10-1

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Rojer/Tecau def. Brunstrom/Nieminen 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Brunstrom and Rojer were long-time partners, but since they’ve split, Jean-Julien Rojer has had a lot more luck….

Buenos Aires

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) (WC) D Ferrer def. A Ramos 6-1 6-2

Yesterday, in the middle of the second set, we got all excited about how David Ferrer had had a solid match — and then he almost let it slip away. No slip-up this time. The bad news is, it still isn’t enough points to count — but it doesn’t matter much; Ferrer is now guaranteed to move up to #4.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) F Fognini def. P Andujar 6-4 6-3

That’s different — a quick match for Fabio Fognini! No points yet, though. He leaves Pablo Andujar right around #40.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) T Robredo def. (6) R Haase 6-1 2-0, retired

Tommy Robredo is probably one win away from the Top Fifteen. He leaves Robin Haase around #45.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Granollers/M Lopez def. Monroe/Stadler 7-6(7-3) 6-1

Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Cuevas/Zeballos def. (WC) M Gonzalez/Schwank 7-5 6-3

Memphis

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) (WC) K Nishikori def. A Bogomolov Jr. 3-6 6-3 6-2

When Kei Nishikori won this event last year, it was a 500 point tournament. He’s going to lose a lot of points — and possibly his Top Twenty ranking — when that comes off next week. So every point he earns here is important. Let’s hope this two and a quarter hour contest didn’t take too much out of him.

Singles – Quarterfinal: M Russell def. (3) L Hewitt 6-3 7-6(8-6)

Lleyton Hewitt is 32 years old, and he had played an evening match the day before, then got stuck with this day match. So this was a lot to ask of him. Too much, it seems. He adds a few points, but it appears he’ll be losing his Top Forty spot.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Y Lu def. (Q) Al. Kuznetsov 6-1 6-4

No question now — Yen-Hsun Lu is Top Fifty. Probably around #46.
