Less than a month ago Australian Open semi-finalist Eugenie Bouchard was the talk of women’s tennis but this weekend she is forced to play the qualifying rounds of the next week’s Dubai Duty Free Championships.
Bouchard requested a wild card into after losing early to Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the nearby Qatar Total Open in Doha. But the last available one went to world no.1 Serena Williams.
Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice-Chairman of tournament owners and organizers Dubai Duty Free, said: “Such is the quality of the field for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, several accomplished players are unable to gain direct entry to the tournament.
“Indeed, many of those who are required to play in the qualifying rounds have achieved success at the very highest level and competition for the four places available in the main draw will be very tough indeed.”
Other experienced campaigners in the Dubai qualifying rounds are Andrea Petkovic, Daniela Hantuchova, Flavia Pennetta, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
