Swiss star Stan Wawrinka is starting to reap the benefits of his Australian Open title, with the newest Grand Slam champion now an official ambassador for Subaru automobiles. The world No. 3 signed a contract with SUBARU Switzerland, concluding negotiations which brought a preliminary agreement last December.
But there is little doubt that the offer was sweetened by a good margin after his Melbourne triumph over Rafael Nadal in the final a fortnight ago.
The 28-year-old “Swiss of the Year” is said to be a perfect fit for the Japanese marque which already boasts several prominent countrymen as endorsers, most notably former ski racer and Olympic downhill course designer Bernhard Russia and popstar DJ Bobo.
The down-to-earth Wawrinka, the working man’s tennis player, explained that he and Subaru can combine well together, “When it comes to the choice of my partners, I am very selective. They have to suit me and what I stand for. Subaru’s all-weather 4×4 possesses many characteristics that are also important to me and represent what I see as the “Swissness” we both have in common.”
Adds Roland Hüsser, general director of SUBARU Switzerland: “We are very happy to have found such a likeable and friendly top-athlete as Stan Wawrinka to represent the core values of the Subaru brand. This will push us further in the future as we continue enhancing our publicity and the significance of the Subaru brand.”
