Switzerland is playing it safe for April’s Davis Cup quarter-final at home against Kazakhstan by picking Geneva’s spacious Palaexpo to host the tie. With the strong possibility that a home side featuring both Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka will be available, officials want to make certain they have enough seats to meet what is expected to be overwhelming demand.
The pair of current and former grand slam event winners combined for a defeat of Serbia in the first round and excitement is already building during a season in which the Swiss have possibilities of going all the way in the international team competition.
Wawrinka, third in the world after beating Rafael Nadal for the Australian Open title, current stands third on the ATP with Federer eighth. “It soon became clear that Geneva was the ideal choice for this event,” said Swiss Tennis boss René Stammbach, after Federer confirmed d he would be onside in April with Wawrinka.
“In the Palexpo Hall 6, we can accommodate up to 16,500 spectators. Additionally, the city of Geneva pledged their support, said Stammbach. Swiss captain Severin Lüthi is also excited about his side’s possibilities. “I know our team loves to play because we have a large number of loyal fans.
“With Stan and Roger in the team, it is clear that we are aiming to qualify for the semi-finals.” In case of victory, the Swiss would face either Italy at home or Britain away after that pair play in April,
