Andy Murray has taken a late wild card entry into the Rotterdam Open next week, with the Scot joining Juan Del Potro in the field after the injury withdrawal of Australian Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka.
Tournament director Richard Krajicek announced the addition of the world No. 8 to the field which also features fellow top 10 players Tomas Berdych, and Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Murray won the Dutch title at the Ahoy stadium in 2009, beating Rafael Nadal in the final; he will be playing for the fourth time after first-round losses in 2008 and 2011. “For the past week I’ve been in contact with Murray’s management,” said Krajicek. “Because he had no tournament in the schedule between the Australian Open and Acapulco (February 24) it seemed like a good idea that he come to Rotterdam.
“After consulting with his coach Ivan Lendl, he made the decision. It’s a wonderful addition to our already strong field.”
Murray will also serve as an informal insurance policy for Del Potro, who is due to play despite consulting a doctor last week about wrist pain.
