Stanislas Wawrinka’s Australian Open victory will have an effect on men’s tennis for some months to come. But the most immediate was prompting Roger Federer to change his stance on the Davis Cup and prompting the new Swiss no.2 to change his mind and make himself available for this week’s World Group tie against Serbia in Novi Sad.
Federer made his dramatic U-turn after previously stating he was again unavailable for the tie. Serbia will be without all three of the leading singles players after world no.2 Novak Djokovic declared himself unavailable with Viktor Troicki banned for missing an anti-doping test and Janko Tipsarevic still suffering from the ruptured heel tendon that kept him out of both last year’s final against the Czech Republic and more recently the Australian Open.
Earlier this week Djokovic was enjoying a skiing holiday in the Serbian resort of Mount Kopaonik, where he has been photographed with friends and family.
Swiss Tennis Federation spokesperson Sandra Perez broke the news when she said: “I can confirm Roger is in Serbia and he will play in the tie. He will take part in the press conference tomorrow when the draw takes place.”
Wawrinka, the new Swiss No. 1, also tweeted a picture with his teammate and team captain: “Look who I found in Novi Sad … @rogerfederer and Captain Severino!
Federer made his last Davis Cup appearance in September 2012 and won his two singles rubbers against The Netherlands to secure Switzerland’s place in the World Group for 2013. He has a 32-7 career record in singles and 11-8 record in doubles.
